1994 - US Department of Justice adds set of categories as foillows:
Hardware as contraband or fruits of crime (any assets acquired from illegal acts or activity)
Hardware as instrumentality
Hardware as evidence
Information as contraband or fruits of crime
Information as instrumentality
Information as evidence
Here,
hardware refers to any physical component of a computer system
information refers to computer programs and data -- stored and/or trasmitted using computer.
Basically, very different procedures are needed when with physical and digital evidence.
