1976...1998 -- Donn Parker introduced the following categorization of digital evidence:
Computer is an object of a crime, e.g. computer is physically destroyed by the suspect
Computer is an subbject of a crime, e.g. computer is infected by a virus.
Computer is a tool to for planning and conducting a crime
Computer used as a symbol. E.g. Wall street broker tells clients he uses secret program on a giant computer of large brokarage firm. Although neither such program exist, nor broker has access to that computer, hundreds of clients beleive the story and invest $100,000.00 each with the broker.
